One on one tutoring

Picture
Our one-on-one tutoring remains a vital part of our literacy program and is geared specifically to those learners who require individualized learning opportunities.

Trained volunteers are paired with learners and work at a time and place that is convenient to them. The tutoring pair is supported by our Program Coordinator and tutor mentors.Trained volunteers are paired with learners and work at a time and place that is convenient to them. Following an initial telephone interview, the learner meets face to face with the program coordinator followed by a placement evaluation to determine the level and types of materials suitable for his/her needs.
Similarly the volunteer, if accepted after a meeting with the coordinator, then goes through a training program which includes a hands-on experience in our learning centre.
We continue to work on the growth of this program, investigating new tutoring tools, new venues for tutoring and new recruitment strategies for adult learners.

Learning Centre

Picture
The Learning  Centre, on the eve of celebrating its 20th anniversary in September 2011, has been  one of our proudest accomplishments. Over 40 adult learners pass through our doors annually.
In September 2010 we modified the way the classes were delivered, reorganizing the groups and creating tutoring teams of volunteers. The groups were organized according to the goals and needs of the learners.
The creation of the tutoring teams also enabled us to begin our tutor mentor program, where new tutors are integrated into the centre with the help of our more senior tutors. The teams arrange their own meetings at least once a month to plan their classes.  Every two months a representative of each team meet with the program coordinator to discuss the overall progression of the programs and any adjustments that are needed.
The Learning Centre currently operates Monday to Thursday mornings, and Thursday afternoon. Our adult learners are introduced to basic reading skills, current events, ‘word of the week’, journal writing and a variety of other literacy skills. We introduced a special class on Wednesday mornings dealing with math skills and using math in everyday life. The learners are introduced to basic math, while learning about schedules, budgets, calculating taxes, etc.

Comfy cozy corner

Keeping with our theme of literacy as an important start to your life, RECLAIM launched a special place in the Southwest Mission to promote literacy. Thanks to a grant from the Gazette’s “Raise a Reader”, we initiated a special corner where the schoolchildren attending the breakfast program can relax and do a quiet literacy activity, while waiting for breakfast to be served. RECLAIM will continue to support the corner by ensuring that literacy materials are available, including children’s magazines, books and other reading and writing activities.

Family literacy day

Our partnership with the Southwest Mission enables us to once to join with the breakfast club of Quebec which runs out of the mission. For the past two years, on January 27th, Family Literacy Day, we went to the breakfast club and made a special breakfast of alphabet pancakes for the children. We continue to promote the idea that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day, literacy the most important start of your life’.
