RECLAIM turned 40!
2020, oh what plans we had! Let’s put a mark on it – and turn the page – to the next 40 years!
We launched the first of our anniversary year plans in January by making the leap into the digital age, and added a more comprehensive digital literacy component in our learning centre. We believed that even those with low levels of literacy needed to have the skills to be comfortable using computer, tablets and other digital media. By March, we quickly found out just how crucial that decision was.
Low literacy individuals lacking computer and internet skills were among the most vulnerable as the pandemic hit. Being told to stay home, isolate and move much of your lives to an online environment proved to be impossible for many of these people. RECLAIM quickly adjusted to our new reality, and began modifying our services to help provide literacy services, online. From training learners and tutors on online platforms to meet, to creating distance learning materials, to reaching out to families in the community as their lives switched to having their children learning at home, we were up for the challenge.
As with past challenges, we would not have been successful had it not been for the generous support of people like you. Thanks to past donations, we had invested in computer equipment that we were able to loan out. As well, we had created a well stocked lending library of high interest low level books and workbooks we have been able to add to our distance learning kits for at home learning.
This is the time of year when we reach out to ask for your support. This year, this ask is particularly difficult for us. We know we have the need to ask, however, we know that many of you have had life changes that will make it difficult for you to support our efforts. Therefore, our ask this year is the following: If you are in a position to help – we thank you. If you are not, we wish you and yours strength, resilience and better days ahead. Our thoughts are with you. Funds raised this year will continue with the adaptation of our programs and services, particularly to supporting families and seniors, and working to make online access a necessity and not a luxury.
